“What is the function of the Omaha Dog Park Advocates (ODPA)?.”
We act as the liaison between dog owners who frequent city dog parks and the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department. We hear your comments and criticisms and meet each month to see how we can resolve these issues. We also raise money throughout the year to help the city with major projects/improvements planned for the parks.
“When are the dog parks open?”
Both of Omaha’s dog parks are open from dawn to dusk.
“Do we have to pay to use Omaha’s dog parks?”
There is no charge to use the dog parks. They are public parks governed and maintained by the city of Omaha.
“Does my dog need any vaccinations or dog license to use the dog parks?”
Yes. Dogs must be currently licensed and vaccinated for rabies, distemper and parvovirus.
“Can I bring water into the dog parks?”
Yes, hydration is very important to your dog’s health. We do have tap water available free at the parks, however the city turns on the water in the spring and turns it off in the fall, so it’s best to bring your own.
“What if I see someone break the dog park rules?”
The Omaha Dog Parks were established on the concept that dog owners would police themselves and each other. Visit the Park Rules page on this site to see the dog park do’s and don’ts. Park rules are also detailed on the Petiquette board displayed as you enter the park. If you see someone who forgets the rules (i.e., forgets to pick up poop) politely introduce yourself, remind them of the rule, and thank them when they comply with the rule. Omaha is full of friendly folks who want to do the right thing.
“Can my newborn puppy come to the dog park?”
No. Dogs must be at least 6 months old and have their rabies shots to come to the dog parks. This is because a puppy’s immune system is not strong enough to fight common bacteria and disease.
“What should I do about an aggressive dog?”
First, remove your dog from the situation. Second, (if it is safe) politely tell the dog’s owner that you feel their dog is aggressive and ask them to take some action to control their dog or leave the park. If you do not feel safe or a polite request has no effect, call Animal Control at The Nebraska Humane Society.
“Can I bring my young children to the dog park?”
We strongly recommend you do not bring young children to the dog park. Young children, especially running children, may be regarded as prey animals by strange dogs. Dogs may also feel the urge to protect children they know. This tends to cause aggressive behavior.
